Study: Restaurant Kids' Meals Loaded With Calories

WASHINGTON (AP) - An industry group says restaurants have been
offering customers more menu choices and better nutritional
information. But a statement says it's up to parents to instill
healthy eating habits in their children.
The National Restaurant Association is reacting to a new report
that founds kids' meals loaded with fat, salt and calories at the
nation's top restaurant chains. The consumer group's report says 93
percent of meal choices at more than a dozen major chains exceed
430 calories. That's one-third of the daily recommendation from the
National Institute of Medicine for children ages 4 through 8.
The report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest
also found nearly half of children's meals exceed recommendations
for saturated and trans fat. Nearly 90 percent of children's meals
were high in sodium.
But the restaurant group says the report fails to acknowledge
the essential role of nutrition education and physical activity. It
adds that "good eating habits and healthy living must be
established in the home."
