FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a sport utility vehicle
packed with suspected illegal immigrants flipped on a rural highway
about 80 miles southeast of Phoenix this morning, killing at least
An Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman says 10 others
in the SUV were injured and were taken to hospitals. All the
victims were adults, and all but two were men. The women both died
at the scene.
Police say the victims were trapped inside the crumpled SUV and
had to be extricated by rescue crews.
A public safety spokesman says a motorist driving in front of
the SUV reports it approached him at a high rate of speed when it
veered off the roadway, crossed a dry wash and slammed into a
concrete abutment, flipping over.
A spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says
agents are investigating suspicions that the SUV was smuggling
