UPDATE:

Police say a 68-year-old man who opened fire in a Delaware courthouse lobby, killing his former daughter-in-law and another woman, fatally shot himself after exchanging gunfire with officers.

State police spokesman Sgt. Paul Shavack said Tuesday that Thomas Matusiewicz of Edcouch, Texas, shot himself in the head after killing 39-year-old Christine Belford and her 47-year-old friend Laura Mulford on Monday. Two police also were hit by gunfire but were protected by their armored vests.

Authorities said Belford and Mulford were at the courthouse for a child support hearing for Belford's ex-husband, David Matusiewicz, following a bitter custody dispute.

David Matusiewicz was being detained by federal authorities Tuesday on charges that he violated probation after pleading guilty in 2009 to fraud and kidnapping charges for taking his children to Central America.

PREVIOUS STORY:

WILMINGTON, Del. - Authorities in Wilmington, Delaware, say three people are dead -- including the shooter -- after a gunman opened fire this morning in a courthouse lobby.

The man exchanged shots with police just as the building was opening to the public for the day.

State police say the gunman and two women are dead. Wilmington's mayor said one of the women who died was the estranged wife of the shooter -- but police say they haven't confirmed that was the case.

Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden says the shooting was the result of a custody dispute.

One man who was entering the courthouse to report for jury duty says it appeared that the shooter deliberately targeted the two women who were shot as they stood in the middle of the lobby. Chick Chinski said he had earlier shared an elevator with the gunman and others from the parking garage. He says the gunman was quiet and did not appear agitated.
