CHICAGO -- The man who's served as President George W. Bush's defense secretary will be staying on.

President-elect Barack Obama said Monday he's chosen Robert Gates to continue as Pentagon chief.

It's a move that brings continuity amid the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the terrorism that erupted last week in India.

Obama says Gates won the confidence of U.S. commanders and military personnel. He says Gates will face a new mission of bringing a responsible end to the war in Iraq.

Prior to his service at the Pentagon as the 22nd defense secretary, Gates was the 22nd president of Texas A&M University. He served in that capacity starting in 2002 until his selection to replace Donald Rumsfeld near the end of 2006.

Also announced as part of Obama's national security team Monday:

- New York Sen. Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State
- Eric Holder as Attorney General
- Marine Gen. Jim Jones as National Security Advisor
- Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano as Homeland Security Secretary
- Susan Rice as US Ambassador to the United Nations
