Sunday, the world's largest private retailer, Wal-Mart, announced it is cutting just over 11,000 jobs at it's Sam's Club stores.
Employees were told of the changes at mandatory meetings Sunday morning.
Former employees tell News Three around 15 employees at the Sam's Club in College Station lost jobs. CEOs said 11,200 workers were laid off in a strategy to help improve sales. During the last quarter, revenue at Sam's fell 1%.
The loss is a departure from this time two years ago when the Brazos Valley was just beginning to feel the effects of the credit crunch, slow economy and high gas prices. At that time people all over the U.S. were shopping at bulk retailers like Sam's, more often.
"A lot more cause usually we would come over here every four to five months," Heather Hardcastle, of Hearne, told News Three in March of 2008.
In January of 2008, Sam's reported a 7% increase in sales over the year before as people traded in frequent trips to the grocery store, for a single, bulk trip.
"I used to could make several little trips but now I can't afford to. Just on fridays and sometimes not even every Friday, just whenever I can," shopper Wanda Waldrep told News Three in 2008.
Two years later, gas in the Brazos Valley is down 60 cents but pocketbooks aren't any less stretched. Its a national reality that may have maxed out Sam's Club's growth as more and more consumers try to make a little go a long way.
Sunday's cuts represent around 10% of the Sam's Club staff, and are primarily from the product sampling and new membership departments.
A Sam's Club spokesperson said it has hired another Arkansas based company to handle product sampling and those employees who were let go may be eligible for those jobs.
