A gas explosion and fire erupted at a Connecticut power plant, resulting in what police described as "mass casualties," CBS Affiliate WFSB reports.
The explosion occurred just before 11:30 a.m. at the Kleen Energy plant on River Road in Middletown.
Initial reports from police scanners suggest many injuries and possibly deaths.
Several ambulances and fire trucks responded to the explosion. Urban search and rescue is being dispatched.
Black smoke was visible for miles. Witnesses said the sound of the explosion could be heard miles away.
The Connecticut State Police is also sending detectives.
No details were immediately available, but police advised people to avoid the area.
