DALLAS (AP) - Former President George W. Bush says Polish President Lech Kaczynski was a strong defender of freedom and a friend to the United States.

Bush says in a statement that he's deeply saddened by the news
of Kaczynski's death.

The Polish president, his wife and some of his nation's highest
military and civilian leaders died Saturday when the presidential
plane crashed as it came in for a landing in thick fog in western
Russia. Polish officials say all 97 people onboard were killed.

Bush says he and former First Lady Laura Bush have fond memories of visits with Kaczynski and his wife. He says they want to express their condolences to the families of all the people killed in the
crash.
