ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. A trial is underway for a New Mexico man accused in a kidnapping that was thwarted by a witness who chased the child snatcher's van down and rescued the 6-year-old girl.
Jury selection began Monday in the case of 31-year-old Phillip Garcia, who authorities say grabbed the girl as she walked home from a neighbor's house in a southwest Albuquerque mobile home park in 2011.
But neighbor 26-year-old Antonio Diaz Chacon said he saw it happen and chased Garcia's van until it crashed into a mesa as the van was heading into the desert.
The suspect fled on foot, and Diaz Chacon rescued the girl. His actions garnered him national attention and offers of gifts and money.
Garcia is charged with kidnapping, child abuse, and reckless driving.
