WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says there's "not even a smidgen" of corruption in the IRS targeting of tea party and other conservative groups.
Obama made the comments in an interview over the weekend during Fox's Super Bowl pregame show.
For months, congressional Republicans have been asking about a criminal investigation into the IRS targeting the groups when they applied for tax-exempt status. The Justice Department's uniform response: Can't talk, it's an ongoing investigation.
On Tuesday, when Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan asked how the president could be so sure, Deputy Attorney General James Cole told the congressman to check with the White House, which said Monday that public testimony and the Justice Department's inspector general completely back up what the president said.
