BOULDER, CO An attorney who represented the parents of JonBenet Ramsey says the indictments that were released today are "nonsensical."
Nearly 17 years after the 6-year-old Colorado beauty queen died, documents were released today showing that a grand jury wanted both of the girl's parents to be charged with child abuse resulting in death and being an accessory to a crime, including murder. The documents allege that both parents intended to delay or prevent the arrest of the person who killed their daughter.
Prosecutors at the time declined to file the charges against John and Patsy Ramsey, who have since been treated as victims in the case. The prosecutors said they didn't have enough evidence. Patsy Ramsey died in 2006.
Ramsey attorney Lin Wood says the indictments were "clearly the result of a confused and compromised process." He says they "reveal nothing about the evidence" reviewed by the grand jury.
Another Ramsey attorney issued a letter this week opposing the release of the indictments. He pointed out that a later prosecutor cleared the Ramseys based on new DNA testing in 2008.
