Days After Isaac, Flooding and Outages Remain

NEW ORLEANS -- Much of Plaquemines Parish is still covered with floodwater and more than 200,000 people across Louisiana still don't have any power, five days after Hurricane Isaac ravaged the state. Also, thousands of evacuees remain at shelters or are bunking with friends or relatives.

Meanwhile, officials north of Lake Pontchartrain are keeping a wary eye on swollen waterways. A mandatory evacuation near the Bush community has been dialed back to a voluntary evacuation after authorities stabilized a lock on the Pearl River Diversion Canal. But officials say the West Pearl River is in danger of flooding and as many as 5,000 homes could be affected.

There are signs of progress however. Much of New Orleans has electricity, but work crews continue to deal with toppled trees and downed power lines.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is visiting storm-stricken areas of south Mississippi and Louisiana today. President Barack Obama is expected in Louisiana on Monday.

At least seven people were killed in the storm in the U.S. -- five in Louisiana and two in Mississippi.
