USA TODAY's Ad Meter Coverage
For the first time, two commercials tied for the top spot in the well-known measure of Super Bowl ads. It was a tie that went to the dogs.
USA TODAY's panel of volunteers ranked the Doritos pug commercial and Bud Light's canine-catered party spot as the highest rated ads during Super Bowl XLV. It's the first time there's been a tie in the annual Ad Meter.
The newspaper brought together 282 adult volunteers in California and Virginia to chart the immediate reactions to every commercial that runs during the game. Those results were then averaged to determine the scores.
The two commercials that tied earned 8.35 ratings on a 10-point scale.
Doritos and Snickers had taken the top spot the previous two Super Bowls, this after Anheuser-Busch's divisions claimed the prize in each of the previous ten years.
Third place went to the Volkswagen commercial featuring a child in a Darth Vader costume.
On the flip side, two Hyundai spots finished in last place in the rankings, and were the only two commercials with less than a 5.0 average.
