ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Albuquerque's Veterans Affairs hospital is at the center of a big drug ring, busted by Bernalillo County narcotics detectives. The product is heroin.
The Investigator General for the Veterans Affairs Department got a tip a few weeks ago that someone was dealing heroin to veterans, both on and off the campus of the VA hospital.
Sheriff's investigators say they watched the deals go down. The main place to do business is just a stones throw from the hospital.
Thursday detectives arrested Anthony Smith and another man, who detectives said were the suppliers. Detectives said Smith had more than an ounce of heroin on him, enough to supply 30 people.
Deputies also arrested several veterans who were buying the heroin. The investigation is far from over, and detectives said more arrests may be coming.
All five men who have been arrested will get extra charges tacked on since the drug deals were happening inside a school zone.
