Thousands of young environmentalists from around the country are heading to Pittsburgh, planning to strengthen the green movement by involving more people of different races and backgrounds.

The Power Shift conference this weekend is fighting coal mining, fracking for oil and gas, and climate change, but doing it through sessions such as "Racism and the Climate Movement" and "Young Leaders from Puerto Rico's Frontlines."

Organizers say they're reaching out to minority communities, seeking to change the typically mostly white and upper-class membership of environmental groups.

Leading environmentalist Bill McKibben says diversity is "absolutely crucial" in the fight to limit damage from climate change. McKibben will speak at the conference, a project of the nonprofit Energy Action Coalition, based in Washington, D.C.
