An aide to former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf says he's called off a planned return to his homeland, where he faces arrest in connection with the killing of an ex-prime minister in 2007.

Musharraf was expected to soon set the date of his return. But Mohammad Ali Saif, general secretary of Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League, says the former president has decided to stay in self-exile because of the tense political situation in Pakistan.

Musharraf did not attend the news conference Friday in Dubai, one of his residences outside Pakistan since he was forced to resign in 2008.

Prosecutors allege Musharraf was linked to plotters that masterminded the killing of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007.
