In Maine, Paul Vies to Extend Romney Losing Streak

Today's caucuses in Maine come down to a competition between one candidate looking for his first win and another looking to end a losing streak.

Ron Paul has scored a few top-three finishes in other early voting states. But his strategy for winning the Republican presidential nomination has focused on winning some of the smaller caucus contests where his passionate base of supporters can have a big impact.

Paul was out this morning in Sanford, greeting caucus-goers at a crowded high school gym. He says he likes his chances in Maine and a win would give him momentum. He says: "It's a pretty important state as far as I'm concerned."

Romney is looking for Maine voters to help as he struggles to convince his party's conservative wing that he should be the candidate they back. He told a crowded caucus in Portland this morning that he learned conservative values from his mom and dad, and promised he would "bring America back" if elected president.

Neither Newt Gingrich nor Rick Santorum, who won in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado on Tuesday, is actively competing in Maine. State party officials plan to declare a winner this evening.
