Massive Thunderstorms, Strong Winds, Hail Pelt Midwest

CHICAGO (AP) The National Weather Service says two tornadoes have touched down in Iowa, as a massive line of storms rolls across the Midwest toward the Mid-Atlantic.

And emergency officials in Illinois are reporting several small tornadoes touched down briefly. So far, there's been no damage reported.

The weather service says nearly 75 million people in 19 states could be affected by the storms, with hail, lightning and fierce winds and more tornadoes possible. Forecasters are even warning about the possibility of a derecho a storm of strong straight-line winds spanning at least 240 miles. The director of the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center says oppressive heat will follow behind.

For the first time this year, the center was using its highest alert level for parts of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. More than 120 flights at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport were canceled in anticipation of bad weather.

In Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh has put added public safety and public works personnel on duty and repositioned equipment to prepare for possible flooding or downed trees and wires.
