Midweek July Fourth Causes Muddle for Travelers

NEW YORK (AP) - This year July Fourth is on a Wednesday, and that has created a dilemma for some folks - how long to go away, if at all.

Anthony Del Gaudio, who's vice president of hotel sales for Loews Hotels, says he isn't seeing the normal July Fourth spike in bookings. He says, "The midweek holiday seems to have travelers confused."

Those who sell vacations have given people more options this year: Tack on Saturday through Tuesday or Thursday through Sunday to the holiday, or just take the entire week off.

But consumers haven't been eager to burn an extra vacation day or two to get the long weekend, or spend the extra money.

AAA projects that 42.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home between July 3 and July 8.

Shane Norton of IHS Global Insight, which does research for AAA, says travel from last year "is pretty flat."
