President Barack Obama is telling the Syrian people that the US stands with them.
In a blistering statement following bloody attacks in the city of Homs, Obama says President Bashar Assad has displayed "disdain for human life and dignity" and repeated his call for Assad to leave power. Obama says Assad has lost legitimacy and has "no right" to stay in power.
Obama condemned the violence in Homs that activists say has left 200 dead. He says the regime's policy of terrorizing its people "only indicates its inherent weakness and inevitable collapse."
Obama also called on the UN Security Council to pass a draft resolution calling on Assad to leave power.
