Perry Signs Ceremonial Budget Bill in Panhandle

AMARILLO, Texas - Gov. Rick Perry has visited his native
West Texas for a ceremonial signing of a budget bill that slashes
funding for public schools and other services.

Perry, who grew up about 250 miles southeast of the Panhandle
city of Amarillo, said Tuesday the tough choices to balance the
budget will position Texas for continued economic growth and job

credentials as a fiscal conservative as he considers a run for

Lawmakers scrambled to balance the deficit-ridden state budget
without raising taxes or spending the so-called rainy day fund, and
did so mostly by slashing education by $4 billion. Perry was vocal
about protecting the state's reserve fund amid calls to tap the
money to ease the pain of cuts.
