A government official says 15 people have been killed and six critically injured in a plane crash in northern Nepal's Himalayas.

The plane was turning around to land at Jomsom Airport when it crashed, leaving the plane in pieces.

An initial investigation indicates it may have had technical problems.

A police official says 21 people were on board. The flight crew was all Nepalese and the passengers were 16 Indians and two Westerners.

Jomsom Airport is a gateway to a popular destination for trekkers and for Hindu pilgrims on their way to the revered temple. It is about 125 miles northwest of the capital, Katmandu.
