Rescuers in the central Philippines are using picks and shovels to try to dig out dozens of people trapped under homes collapsed by a 6.9-magnitude quake that also set off landslides.

At least 13 people have been killed and 40 are believed missing, mostly in a mountain village in Negros Oriental province. Some of the dead were students at a college and an elementary school. Others died in a town market that collapsed. Some 100 people were injured.

Army troops and police have been sent to the area to help in the rescue.

Food and medicine are waiting to be delivered to those who in need, but the aid can't reach villages because of damaged roads and bridges.
