OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Other public transit options into San Francisco appear more crowded, as commuters face the absence of Bay Area Rapid Transit train service because of a strike.

Passengers on Alameda-Contra Costa Transit buses on Monday morning said there were more passengers than usual. Television news footage showed a long line for the San Francisco Bay Ferry from Oakland's Jack London Square.

More people also appeared to be turning to their cars. Traffic leading up to the toll plaza of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was heavy.

Meanwhile, BART workers picketed outside some of the train system's stations.

The walkout promised to derail the more than 400,000 riders who use the nation's fifth-largest rail system and affect every mode of transportation.
