TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- Two firefighters battling a blaze at an apartment complex near downtown Toledo have been killed.

Toledo Fire Department Chief Luis Santiago says that 42-year-old Stephen Machcinski and 31-year-old James Dickman died while fighting the fire. Machcinski had served on the force for 16 years, while Dickman had been on the job only six months.

Santiago says that the fire department will fully investigate the blaze in the six-unit apartment building. The fire was reported around 3:30 p.m.

Santiago says that fellow firefighters made "valiant efforts" to save the men during the fire and began lifesaving measures after they were taken from the building.

The firefighters were taken to Mercy St .Vincent Medical Center, where a large crowd of Toledo Fire Department personnel gathered.
