WASHINGTON - People assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, Libya have been moved to neighboring Tunisia because of concerns about violence and instability there.

The State Department announced on Saturday that it had closed its embassy in Libya and evacuated American staffers there as the security situation deteriorates in the capital city.

Clashes between rival militias are growing more fierce and violent.

The department said the American embassy staff left Tripoli on Saturday and traveled overland to Tunisia. Embassy operations in Tripoli will be suspended until the security situation improves, it said. Tripoli has been embroiled for weeks in inter-militia violence that has killed and wounded dozens on all sides. The fighting has been particularly intense at the city's airport.

American travelers are also being advised to steer clear of Libya.

Secretary of State John Kerry says the embassy isn't being shut down permanently, but diplomatic activities there are being suspended
