Winter Storm Plows into Mid-Atlantic Region, Knocking out Power

The winter storm that threatened the nation's capital hasn't brought as much snow as forecasters had expected to Washington itself.

But elsewhere in the Mid-Atlantic region, it's dumped more than a foot of snow and knocked out power to nearly 200,000 homes and businesses.

Virginia appeared to take the biggest punch from the storm. Dozens of National Guard soldiers have been sent to central and northern parts of the state to help. And utility crews are scrambling after the high winds and the wet, heavy snow snapped tree limbs, knocking out power to 170,000 customers in Virginia alone.

The streets in Washington were quiet. The threat of up to 10 inches of snow had prompted federal offices and schools across the region to close.

In Pennsylvania and Ohio, many areas had 4 to 6 inches of snow.
