Plaza Implosion Debris To Be Recycled

Updated: Fri 3:30 AM, May 18, 2012

By this time next week, the old Plaza Hotel in College Station will be nothing but debris after an implosion earlier in the day, and all that rubble won't be taken to a landfill.

Engineers on the project say they have plans to recycle most of the material.

The now standing Plaza Hotel in College Station will turn to debris to make room for a new development at Texas Avenue and University Drive.

"It's not going to the landfill. It is not all garbage,” said Veronica Morgan, one of the civil engineers in charge of the implosion project.

She says the entire process is very green.

"We have heard from a lot of folks that have been excited that we have recycled a lot of the materials coming out of the Plaza Hotel. Some of the dishes even and things like that. People were able to get those kind of as a memory of the hotel,” said Morgan.

Habitat for Humanity received 8 truckloads of furniture from inside the hotel.

But what's going to happen to all the rubble outside after the implosion?

Brazos Paving Inc. will be taking all the concrete an asphalt from the project to its yard on HWY 21 to be recycled.

The 50,000 tons of concrete will be crushed into useable road base material meeting TXDOT specifications. Road Base can be used for city and county streets.

The 20,000 tons of asphalt will be crushed into finer material that can be used as an alternative street topping which provides a cost effective alternative to Hot Mix Asphaltic Concrete for residential driveways according to Landon Alford with Brazos Paving Inc.

Morgan says clearing the site of all the rubble will take a few weeks after the big implosion.

Next Thursday, we'll have live coverage of the implosion, so if you can't watch in person, watch it on Brazos Valley This Morning.

News 3's coverage begins at 5:30 a.m. with the implosion set to happen at about 6:30 a.m.
