SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A fugitive from a private San Antonio jail
has been captured in Boerne (BUR'-nee).
The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force says its agents and Boerne
police officers captured 35-year-old Esequiel Pena (PEHN'-yah)
yesterday at the Arbor Apartments in the Hill Country town.
A statement issued by the task force says a citizen tip alerted
Boerne police to Pena's presence at the apartment complex. The
police and task force agents mobilized and took Pena into custody
about midday yesterday.
Pena escaped the Central Texas Detention Facility in San Antonio
sometime between Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon. But
authorities say no one reported his absence until a full day had
The U.S. Marshals Service say Pena apparently pulled back a
chain-link fence around a rooftop recreation yard and climbed down
an eight-story fire escape.
Pena was at the Central Texas Detention Facility for violating
terms of his supervised release. He was previously convicted of an
unspecified weapons charge and re-arrested for a different offense.
The jail's run by The GEO Group, which is based in Boca Raton,
Florida. Boerne is about 30 miles northwest of San Antonio.
