Military Contract Fraud Trial Begins in Rock Island

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a former
employee of a Halliburton subsidiary conspired with a Kuwaiti
businessman to cheat the U.S. military out of millions of dollars.
Former KBR procurement officer Jeff Alex Mazon faces multiple
fraud charges. He is accused of inflating bids on refueling tankers
and being paid $1 million dollars by the company for whom he helped
secure contracts.
Mazon's attorneys say the 39-year-old was simply overworked and
erred in converting Kuwaiti currency to U.S. dollars.
Testimony is scheduled to resume Wednesday.
Some of the counts facing Mazon carry prison sentences of up to
20 years if convicted.
