Texas Senator Picks Up Border Endorsements Despite Fence Vote

WASHINGTON (AP) - Some Texas border leaders opposed to the
border fence are forgiving Senator John Cornyn for voting to
require the fence.
The Texas Republican picked up several endorsements over the
weekend from Rio Grande Valley officials as he seeks a second
six-year term in the U.S. Senate.
Some officials say Cornyn has offset his vote with other work
and votes that have helped the border.
Cornyn faces a November challenge from Democratic state
Representative Rick Noriega of Houston, in November. Democrats see
Cornyn as vulnerable. But the junior senator has far more campaign
money than Noriega and the endorsements are from a key
constituency.
For example, McAllen Mayor Richard Cortez says Cornyn helped
push for more time for Mexican visitors with border crossing visas
to visit the United States. With Cornyn's support, the time was
extended from 72 hours to one month. He continues to support an
extension to six months and travel privileges throughout the U.S.
as Canadians are granted.
