HOUSTON (AP) A man arrested and charged this week with 1987 slaying of a 68-year-old Houston woman has died while in custody.
Texas Department of Criminal Justice officials say 71-year-old Roman Martinez died Thursday night of an apparent heart attack, a day after he collapsed and two days after Harris County sheriff's officials announced he was charged with capital murder in the death of Jacqueline Anderson.
She was found bound and strangled inside her home after she caught a man burglarizing her house in Houston's northern suburbs in 1987. Deputies say Martinez confessed to breaking in to the house but contended Anderson was alive when he fled the scene.
The sheriff's office reopened the case last year and identified Martinez as a prime suspect.
