GANADO, Texas -- The small town of Ganado is one of the first school districts in southeast Texas that will allow teachers to carry guns. Louise ISD has approved a similar measure.
“I think it’s a good thing,” said Darla Ermis whose son attends junior high in the Louise district.
The communities of Ganado and Louise are located on Highway 59 southeast of Houston.
Superintendent Jeff Black says, “The purpose of the policy is to make Ganado ISD an even safer place.”
Teachers who want to carry concealed weapons must get approval from the board. Their identities will remain anonymous.
Six hundred and fifty students attend classes in the small farming community of Ganado.
The city’s police chief says crime is not a problem, and there have been no murders since he began working on the force 15 years ago.
Ganado High School senior Alyssa Reyes likes the new policy.
I feel like that’s more protection for students,” said Reyes.
Others students aren’t sure the plan is such a good idea.
“Until something happens you don’t know which side you’re on,” said Freshman Israel Cruz.
Superintendent Black says a gun has never been confiscated at any of the district’s schools.
The measure, Black says, is needed “in the event that something bad was to occur.”
Edna ISD says its board is also considering allowing its teachers to carry concealed weapons.
Edna’s superintendent is researching the idea and will file a report with the board for consideration.
Edna is located near both Louise and Ganado.
A few other districts in northeast Texas already allow teachers to carry weapons in school.
