The War On Terror Has Brazos County Officials Gearing Up

Brazos County Sheriff's officials are training for you.

The Sheriff's Emergency Response Group or SERG is testing out a new device that can sniff out airborne chemicals and harmful gases.

The newly aquired device is called the Hazardous Gas & Vapor Identifier, or HGVI. It was demonstrated Monday morning by The Sheriff's Emergency Response Group at the Brazos Valley Sheriff's office.

"Any type of terroristic situation that might arise, involving a dirty bomb or release of a serin gas or those type of chemicals blister agents," Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk said. "With this device, we have the capability of understanding what the attack mechanism is and how to react to it."

Efforts from The Brazos County Health Department, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator made this device possible. It was purchased with a Public Health Preparedness Grant, which is funded by the Center of Disease Control, or CDC.

Brazos County is the only Texas agency with this device.

Kirk also said, "We can look for a full range of chemicals and biohazards with this, and be able to use it to affect some sort of response that we would, in the form of rescue or operations to recover or actually working a crime scene."

Now SERG is training once a month with the health department and other law enforcement agencies to prepare for emergency situations. Just in case disaster strikes here.

The Brazos County Sheriff's Emergency Response Group, is designed to respond to high-risk situations or critical incidents involving potential loss of human life.
