ELDORADO, Texas (AP) - Women and girls in prairie-style dresses
today entered the Schleicher County courthouse as a grand jury
opened its investigation of a polygamist sect.
Security was heavy in Eldorado.
Sect members have denied allegations that underage girls were
forced into marriage and motherhood.
Child Protective Services in early April raided the group's
ranch, removing several hundred youngsters.
The Texas Supreme Court later ruled the children must be
returned to their parents.
The Associated Press reports one subpoenaed witness is a
16-year-old girl who denies state claims that she was married off
at 15 and had a child soon after. She's asked for a new lawyer.
