BAYTOWN, Texas (AP) - A judge today ordered a Baytown girl to
remain in custody as she faces charge over the death of her newborn
son in a school bathroom.
Baytown police say the 14-year-old girl is charged as a juvenile
with capital murder. She can't be executed because of her age.
Prosecutors will decide whether to certify her as an adult.
The girl gave birth April 2nd in a bathroom at Cedar Bayou
Junior High. Police say she stuffed toilet paper in the infant's
throat and tried to flush him away.
An autopsy found the boy had been alive and cried.
The Houston Chronicle reports the eighth-grader burst into tears
upon hearing the judge's ruling to keep her in the custody of
Harris County juvenile authorities.
Another hearing is expected in about ten days.
