WASHINGTON (AP) - Some Texas Republicans dropped support for a
bill by Democratic Congressman Silvestre Reyes that would name a
canal after one of his contributors.
The Associated Press reports those Republicans are co-sponsors
of similar bills authored by their GOP colleagues.
Reyes, who is the U.S. House Intelligence Committee chairman,
has been criticized for sponsoring a bill to name the Rio Grande
American Canal System after Travis Johnson.
AP reports that Johnson, who's a private citizen, has
contributed to Reyes and other Democrats.
The watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste is opposed
to the Reyes bill. The group says Johnson has donated $13,500 to
Congress is in recess and Reyes couldn't immediately be reached.
But spokesman Vince Perez said Johnson is well respected for his
work on water rights disputes between the U.S. and Mexico.
