AUSTIN (AP) - Some lawmakers today raised the possibility of
making the appointed Texas transportation commissioner an elected
position.
Legislators in Austin reviewed a proposal to revamp the
Department of Transportation governing board.
A blistering report by the Sunset Advisory Committee has
characterized the agency as agenda-driven and untrustworthy.
The agency has drawn attention over planned public-private toll
road partnerships, the route of the proposed Trans-Texas Corridor
and budget errors.
Representative Ruth Jones McClendon drew applause, from the
audience, when she said she's hearing members of the public want an
elected commissioner.
Newly appointed Transportation Commission chairwoman Deirdre
Delisi assured lawmakers that the agency has taken measures to be
more transparent and accountable.
Proposed changes will go to the 2009 Legislature.
