Huntsville Execution Draws International Attention

The prospect of Texas carrying out the death penalty in one of Houston's most brutal murder cases is making the planned execution among the most contentious.

The scheduled execution of convicted killer Jose Medellin in Huntsville Tuesday evening has attracted international attention.

The World Court said the Mexican-born Medellin should have a new
hearing. Medellin's attorneys contend Medellin was denied the protections of the Vienna Convention. It calls for people arrested to have access to their home country's consular officials.

But the nation's busiest capital punishment state has refused to
budge.

Texas officials acknowledged Medellin was not told he could ask for help from Mexican diplomats. But say the diplomats' intercession wouldn't have made any difference in the outcome of the case.

And a spokesman for the Texas Attorney General's Office says Texas is not bound by the World Court.

The 33-year-old Medellin was one of six teenagers charged with the gang rape and murders of 16-year-old Elizabeth Pena and 14-year-old Jennifer Ertman.
