CAMERON (June 24, 2014) Milam County Precinct 1 Commissioner Chuck "Tank" Balch has resigned after a Texas Rangers investigation into the improper use of county funds, personnel and equipment.

Balch resigned and paid $5,000 in restitution to the county in a deal offered by the district attorney in lieu of presentation of the case to a grand jury and possible indictment, County Judge David Barkmeyer said Tuesday.

A news release issued Tuesday by the Milam County District Attorney’s Office said the investigation determined that Balch used county funds, personnel and equipment to complete a project at a Milam County church.

"He (Balch) has accepted responsibility, made restitution to Milam County and tendered his resignation, effective June 30, 2014", the statement said

Barkmeyer said the work was done at the Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, in Marak, about 11 miles northwest of Cameron.

Barkmeyer said he would appoint someone to fill the position vacated by the resignation and the person would serve until the general election in November.

The county’s Republican and Democratic parties may each name a candidate for the position whose name will appear on the November general election ballot, the said.

He said he likely will appoint the Republican candidate to the temporary position.
