Vice President, First Lady and GOP Who's Who Attend Armstrong Memorial

The death of a former Texas A&M System regent who served as an advisor to four U.S. presidents is drawing some big names to Aggieland.

Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne, along with First Lady Laura Bush, Former Sect of State James Baker, and GOP Strategist Karl Rove were all in attendance Friday afternoon for the memorial service for Anne Armstrong.

Texas Governor Rick Perry was also in attendance.

Armstrong died July 30 at the age of 80. She had battled cancer and was in a Houston hospice for about a week before her death, according to the Associated Press.

Armstrong was appointed to the A&M System Board of Regents in 1997 by then-Governor George W. Bush, and served until her term expired in 2003.

Armstrong's life of public spanned over half a century. She served as the first woman ambassador to Great Britain, taking the post in 1976.

She was a national leader of the Republican Party and Cabinet-level adviser to Presidents Nixon and Ford.

More recently, Armstrong was an adviser on foreign intelligence to Presidents Reagan and George H. W. Bush.

In 1987, President Reagan awarded Armstrong the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her service to the country.

The Memorial service was held at Rudder Auditorium at Texas A&M. College Station.
