BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Two men have been sentenced to prison for illegally exporting about 3,000 rounds of ammunition from South Texas to Mexico.

A federal judge in Brownsville on Tuesday sentenced Guillermo Enrique Villarreal of Brownsville and Leoncio Sanchez, an American who was living in Matamoros, Mexico.

Both pleaded guilty in January to exporting defense articles without a license. Sanchez was sentenced to almost five years in prison. Villarreal received a term of nearly three years.

Prosecutors say the investigation started after the men bought about 3,000 rounds at a store in McAllen, just days after purchasing about 4,000 rounds of ammo. Surveillance began last December.
