A federal grand jury has indicted three more former South Texas law enforcement officers on drug conspiracy charges, bringing to seven the number of members of a now-disbanded drug task force to be charged.
Federal prosecutors say Wednesday's superseding indictment included three former Hidalgo County sheriff's deputies who were members of the so-called Panama Unit. The new indictment charges Salvador Joel Arguello, Claudio Alberto Mata and Eric Michael Alcantar with conspiring to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine.
Among those previously charged were two former Mission police officers who were the sons of the sheriff and Hidalgo police chief.
Three other non-officers were also named in the new indictment, including a man who court documents say installed compartments in truck trailers to hide drugs.
