HOUSTON (AP) -Texas prison officials today arrested the mother
of a death row inmate on charges she paid for minutes for an
illegal cell phone smuggled to him.
Sixty-year-old Lorraine Tabler was arrested at Austin-Bergstrom
International Airport as she arrived on a flight from Georgia.
Meanwhile, guards confiscated a phone from her imprisoned son --
29-year-old Richard Tabler of Killeen. He was condemned for killing
two men during a 2004 Thanksgiving weekend shooting spree.
Prison officials say Richard Tabler and as many as nine other
death row inmates made some 2,800 calls from the cell phone in the
last 30 days.
He was sentenced to death last year over the fatal shootings of
a strip club manager and another man. The victims were 28-year-old
Mohammed-Amine Rahmouni and his 25-year-old friend, Haitham Zayed.
Investigators say Richard Tabler had been a frequent customer at
the club, but was asked to leave.
