The polls are now closed statewide as Texans wait for the winners of presidential and local elections.
The Texas election chief predicted a 68 percent overall turnout of the state's 13.5 million registered voters. The 9 million-voter estimate includes early voting and Tuesday's voting and is 12 percentage points higher than the 2004 general election turnout. It remains to be seen what the actual numbers are. In Brazos County, officials predicted turn out to be about 70,000, but it looks like only about 60,000 actually cast their votes.
