DALLAS (AP) - Authorities in Texas and Utah say a former Utah state trooper suspected in a series of rush-hour shootings near Dallas had an addiction to painkillers, and he was wanted in connection with a recent robbery.
Dallas police think Brian Smith was responsible for at least one shooting death. They won't talk about a similar killing in nearby Garland, which is out of their jurisdiction. Police say Smith fits the description of the man they were looking for in connection with the shootings.
Smith is on life support at a Dallas hospital after authorities say he shot himself in the head following a brief stand-off early Tuesday.
The crimes appear to have begun in Garland, where a man police identified as Smith jumped over a pharmacy counter at a grocery store and stole Oxycontin pills.
