Proposed Bike Fee For A&M Students

Aggie students who bike to class may soon have to pay to pedal.

A student advisory committee is pushing for a 10-dollar registration fee for students who ride bicycles on campus.

The committee believes by knowing who the owners are, it'll lower the number of abandoned and stolen bicycles.

The students we spoke to today were a bit skeptical, but are willing to give the program a chance. Sophomore A&M student Matt Brickey had his bike stolen in December. He says he's still dealing with the grief and hopes something like this works. "The way I see it, if it does prevent theft, and benefit the students... I'm willing to pay $10 more for the people who are stealing bikes to see more charges. For the people who have bikes, especially the nicer ones, that they can get a bike back worth equal amount or more."

News 3 talked to several other students. Like Brickey, they had either had a bike stolen from them or knew someone whose bike had been stolen.

Texas A&M Police say 96 bicycles, valued at just under 30-thousand dollars, have been stolen on campus so far this year.

If this bike registration proposal is approved it would be implemented in time for fall of 2010.
