(MEXICO CITY)Mexico’s president has ordered an investigation into a fire that tore through a day-care center, killing 31 children.

At least 25 other children and five employees were hospitalized after Friday’s fire in northern Mexico.

Some of the burns are so severe the patients may be taken to U.S. hospitals.

The cause of the fire isn't yet known, but state officials say it may have started at a neighboring tire and car warehouse.

There were about 100 children in the day-care at the time of the fire.

Firefighters punched through walls and fought through flames to reach the children.

Reforma newspaper reports neighbors also rushed to help pull children from the fire.

The Mexican government has sent a team of burn specialists, three air ambulances and other medical equipment.
