AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A judge has ordered the release from jail
of two suspects awaiting retrial in the 1991 murders of four
teenage girls at an Austin yogurt shop.
Michael Scott and Robert Springsteen were previously convicted
in the slaying of Amy Ayers, 13. Scott was sentenced to life in
prison, and Springsteen was originally sent to death row.
Both convictions were overturned on appeal, and state District
Judge Mike Lynch on Wednesday ordered the men's release on personal
recognizance bonds.
New DNA tests on evidence from the crime scene revealed the
presence of someone other than Scott or Springsteen. Defense
attorney says that proves their innocence.
