A sinkhole in a remote area about 75 miles southwest of Lubbock has grown to at least 50 feet deep.
Occidental Permian Ltd. spokeswoman Stacey Crews said Wednesday
that a company employee came upon the sinkhole.
She says the sinkhole, when discovered Monday, was about 210 feet long, 220 feet wide and about 50 feet deep.
Crews told The Associated Press that the sinkhole is 2 miles northeast of Denver City on property not owned by the company. She says no Occidental wells appear to have been involved, but the company shut down its nearby wells, as a precaution.
Crews says Occidental "had someone checking a well, and boom, they saw it, the sinkhole. We wanted to be good neighbors and secure the area."
No injuries were reported.
