An Austin woman found shot to death in her bed had been notified that her son was absent without leave from Fort Benning, Georgia.
Pvt. Travis Wayne Baczewski of Austin remained in the Travis County Jail on Thursday on $1.1 million bail.
Baczewski is charged with capital murder in Sunday's killing of
54-year-old Violetta Baczewski, plus unauthorized use of a motor
vehicle. Electronic court records did not indicate an attorney for him.
The victim's husband, Steven, works in Iraq for a private company.
The 22-year-old soldier was arrested Monday in Alamo, a town near the Mexican border. His father's car was recovered.
An affidavit says the victim July 23 received a letter from the Army that her son was AWOL, not on leave as he claimed.
